FAQs – Private Pilot Licence

You must be at least 17 to hold a PPL (you can start training earlier). A Class 2 medical from a CAANZ-approved examiner is required.

The PPL requires around 50 flying hours—most students take just over that to reach a confident standard

You’ll cover Aviation Law, Meteorology, Navigation, Aircraft Technical Knowledge, Human Factors, and Radiotelephony—skills essential for safe and competent flight.

Students often complete their PPL within a year, flying at a regular weekly pace. If you dedicate full time, some complete the licence faster; others take longer depending on weather and scheduling.

New Zealand’s aviation rules require that you are of fit and proper character and proficient in English (usually via IELTS or equivalent) to be licensed

With a PPL, you can pilot an aircraft privately, carry friends, hire aircraft you’re type-rated on, and fly across New Zealand for non-commercial purposes
